In middle school and high school, Chiaro was often the subject of bullying and ridicule. When his parents divorced when he was 13, Scuro was born from the overpowering and conflicting feelings.

For a long time, Chiaro and Scuro were friends. Scuro would protect Chiaro, and Chiaro would provide a friend to the often lonely Scuro.

When Chiaro was 16, Scuro broke down with seemingly no reason, becoming malevolent and controlling, striving to be the dominant personality. After many treatments failing, Chiaro confined himself to his apartment, fruitlessly attempting to regain full control.
